BIOGRAPHY

Accomplishments and Aspirations

Composer, audio engineer, and musician Kaelis Ash developed an interest in composition during high school, inspired in part by the original works written by his band director, Mark Minton, for the marching band. Observing these pieces come to life sparked an early curiosity about the compositional process and the possibilities of writing for larger ensembles.

While still in high school, Kaelis wrote and presented his first collection of original pieces, culminating in a set of wind ensemble works premiered as part of his senior project. This experience solidified his desire to pursue composition more seriously, particularly for large ensembles. Prior to college, he had the opportunity to study with Dr. Thomas Stone, a local composer and owner of Maestro and Fox Music. He continues to value the guidance and insight of both Dr. Stone and Mr. Minton, and currently studies with Dr. Thomas Wilson.

Kaelis has also benefited from the mentorship of several respected composers, including an opportunity to meet with Dr. Frank Ticheli, a well-known wind ensemble composer and former professor of composition at the University of Southern California. During a visit to Dr. Ticheli’s home in the summer of 2018, Kaelis received valuable advice and encouragement that helped shape his path forward.

Originally from Bernice, Louisiana, Kaelis further developed his passion for composition in the Shreveport-Bossier area. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Music Industry Studies from Louisiana Tech University. During his time there, he composed and arranged music for a variety of ensembles, including the Symphonic Wind Ensemble as well as several chamber groups that he helped to found and lead. His works were performed regularly throughout his time at the university, and in his final year he organized and led a student-run brass ensemble, providing an opportunity to present both original compositions and new arrangements. These experiences allowed him to explore both large ensemble writing and more intimate settings while working closely with fellow musicians in both performance and rehearsal environments.

Central to Kaelis’s work is a desire to create music that captures the same sense of wonder and joy he experienced as a performer. Drawing from the works that shaped him as a young musician, he aims to write music that resonates with performers and audiences alike, with the hope of passing that same sense of excitement and connection on to others.

Currently based in the Shreveport-Bossier area, Kaelis continues to develop his craft and seek opportunities to share his work. He has received commissions from a variety of ensembles and remains active in writing for groups at the middle school, high school, and collegiate levels, both locally and beyond.
